Coroner’s Inquest into the A41 accident in August 2018

Councillor Corkin and the Parish Council Chairman attended the Inquest on Wednesday 30 January as observers.

The purpose of the Inquest was to determine who, how, when and where.

The Coroner, Mr Darren Salter, read out summaries from the statements from witnesses, including 2 HGV drivers, one of whom had a dashcam recorder on his cab.  The Coroner also confirmed the Post Mortem report which indicated that Mr Nelson had died from serious head injuries, but there were no toxicology issues.

The pedestrian, who was interested in churches, had been staying at the Lion and had visited St. Giles Church and was going to walk across to Chesterton.  He opened the gate and that was the last he remembered, probably hit by a tree.  He was attended by members of the public until the emergency services arrived.  There was no suggestion that the pedestrian was either involved with or in any way responsible for the accident.

The only formal witness was a representative from TVP Accident Investigation Team.  He informed the Coroner that:

  1. the BMW had been modified, but all aspects of the car were fine;
  2. they concluded that the tyres had lost grip, and the car spun round, hitting the curb, the trees and fencing and bouncing back to face oncoming traffic;
  3. they had established that the car was travelling at 101mph, and that road undulations in lane 2 MAY have been a factor leading to loss of control by the driver

The Police did drive along the stretch at 70mph and at 101 mph and did confirm some movement at the higher speed where the road was uneven. There was some discussion if the existing warning signs were in the right place.

The final verdict was Death by Road Accident and the Coroner would write to the County Council.

Don’t lose your right to vote

The Electoral Register is a list of everyone who is allowed to vote at election time.  If you’re not on it, you won’t be allowed to vote and you will also not be able to put yourself forward as a Parish Councillor at the May elections.

So, if you’ve moved house recently, you’ll need to update your details.  It only takes about five minutes and you’ll need your national insurance number.

More information is available on Cherwell District Council’s website at: https://www.cherwell.gov.uk/info/11/elections/319/electoral-register-and-registering-to-vote  and the link to register to vote is a national Government website which then links back to the correct area – https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Cherwell will then write to your household once a year (usually in early autumn) to ask you to confirm the list of residents they have for your household; sometimes people don’t respond to that letter in time, so if you haven’t responded yet you’ll need to re-register.

Please do update your details and make sure that you are able to maintain your democratic right to vote.

Repairs to the A41 and the Bus Stop Gates and fence

The first tranche of work to be carried out along the A41 from Junction 9 of the M40 towards Bicester (particularly at the Wendlebury bus stops) will be carried out via a series of overnight lane closures.  The dates are as follows:

A41 Bicester bound lane 1: 18-19 February

A41 Bicester bound lane 2: 20-22 February

A41 Oxford bound lane 1 25-27 February

A41 Oxford bound lane 2 28 February – 1 March

The works will include

Hard cut back of vegetation
Repairs to Fence by Bus Stop (Southbound)
Installation of reflective bollards where HGVs are currently parking
Remarking of Bus Stop markings
Repairs / cleaning of signs
Resolution of ponding issues – installation of drainage
Coring of subsided areas to find out why dips have occurred – this is in lieu of these areas being resurfaced early in the new financial year.

More details will follow soon about the possibility of a footbridge.

An update from the Bicester Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team

Between the 12th – 26th November for Op Ranger, a rural crime initiative, the rural team visited local businesses and farms to offer crime prevention advice and provide a visible presence.

Now we have moved into the winter months, it is time to review the security of your property. Things to do include; fitting lighting in dark or hidden entrances and outdoor areas. Use timer lights indoors when you are out. Lock everything that you possibly can and don’t leave bins near fences or gates.  Don’t keep valuable items near windows, make a list of these and take photos of them.

Please remember that if you see absolutely anything suspicious, please call us. The police will really appreciate your call. Look out for car registration numbers, person descriptions, direction of travel and anything else that you think may be relevant. Your call may help prevent a crime taking place. Call 101 if it isn’t an emergency and 999 if there is a threat to life or a crime in progress.

There have recently been reports of rogue traders carrying out garden maintenance and roof repairs etc. Please be vigilant and look out for yourself and neighbours. If you are concerned then please call us.

Courier fraud is also on the increase at the moment, this is when you’re called by someone pretending to be from your bank or building society and convinced to tell them your card details over the phone. They arrange for a courier to pick up your card to take it away for evidence or to have it destroyed. In reality, the card is collected by the fraudsters to withdraw money from your account. If you receive a call like this then call action fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Please sign up to Thames Valley Alert. This will enable you to receive emails from the police with crime updates, witness appeals and crime prevention advice. The link is https://www.thamesvalleyalert.co.uk/pages/1177/1/Available_sites.html

The next Rural Community Forum is on 20th February 2019 at Fringford Village Hall from 7pm – all are welcome to attend.
